Senior Capstone Project, Rethinking our Food Systems: Barge Delivery in Milwaukee

Name: Julia Schilling
Class: landarc551, Senior Project in Landscape Architecture, Eric Schuchardt & Shawn Kelly
Major: Landscape Architecture

This project investigates the design of a barge delivery food hub located at the Port of Milwaukee. Situated on Lake Michigan at the northernmost port of the Mississippi river system, intersecting three major rivers, with two on-site rail lines and within a half mile of two major highways, the derelict Solvay Coke and Gas site is the ideal testing ground for exploring the potential of a multi-modal food distribution network. Food system transparency, food accessibility, public waterfront access, and brownfield remediation are integral components of this proposal. The design strategies and research for this site in the City of Milwaukee will be used to communicate the greater regional and community impacts of creating a decentralized food distribution system in alliance with the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems and an interdisciplinary team of stakeholders invested in rethinking the future of our food systems.

Senior Capstone Project - Floodplain Strategic Planning

Name: Lyn Kim
Class: LA551 SENIOR PROJECT IN LAND ARC, ERIC S. & SHAWN K.
Major: Landscape Architecture

This piece is connected to design because I was challenged to transform an 80-acre neighborhood that is currently undergoing various social, economic, and environmental deterioration into a desirable place to live in despite its location within the 100-year floodplain while being next to an active industrial site. Through research and analysis of the site’s current conditions and various floodplain management methods in addition to client and stakeholder inputs, I proposed a design solution that will serve as a framework for the redevelopment of the Olde North Neighborhood. By introducing new programs that resonate with the site’s current demographic and environmental conditions and historical context, the newly revitalized Olde North may ultimately become the next big destination both Green Bay and Wisconsin’s greater Northeast region.

Open Space Design - Fitch Springs Park

Name: Lyn Kim
Class: LA451 OPEN SPACE PLANNING + DESIGN, SAMUEL DENNIS
Major: Landscape Architecture

This piece is connected to design as I was challenged to creatively transform an underused golf course located within a low income, low median age neighborhood that lack access to open space, into a public park that serves to represent environmental equity for the people in the surrounding community. The programmed spaces within the park and their type, color, quality and shapes were intentionally designed to meet the needs and aesthetic preferences of the people living in this neighborhood.
